LECOM Bradenton Students enroll in the Problem Based Learning (PBL) Pathway. Through interaction in
small-groups, medical students learn basic and clinical sciences by focusing on patient cases.
Groups of eight students and a faculty facilitator meet several times per week to work through a
particular case study and identify learning issues. In between PBL meetings, students work
independently or together on the learning issues, then bring new information to the table to
discuss and refine at subsequent meetings.
“PBL involves interactive learning.
It makes you take responsibility for your own learning. Everything you learn is reinforced by
fellow PBL students and future case studies.” Bethany Steadman, Class of 2010.
“PBL incorporates all aspects of being a doctor rather than segmenting subjects. I get a
much better understanding of entire topics by working through case studies. And, we learn from
each other. We can bounce ideas off one another and take advantage of each other’s
strengths. In a lecture format, we may never have the opportunity to know where other
students’ strengths lie.” Andrea Apple, Class of 2010.
